The Economics of being a Intercollegiate "Club" Sport
The Humboldt State Univ. Women's Rugby Team is categorized by the university as an intercollegiate "club" sport. This essentially means that we do not receive the amount or type of support afforded NCAA Intercollegiate sports such as paid coaches, paid trainers and support staff, equipment, etc.
And because rugby is an intercollegiate "club" sport at HSU (not an NCAA intercollegiate sport) the players are responsible for everything from organizing our travel and setting up our own fields to fundraising and purchasing equipment. All of this on top of going to school and working.
After HSU's annual contribution of approximately $6300, we have an unmet funding need of $14,600 each year, to be made up through fundraising activities and tax-deductable donations (cash or in-kind) from family and businesses. If our total funding need is not met, we are forced to begin cutting the 'luxury' items from our budget, such as hotels, equipment, jerseys, etc. When we raise enough money, or when necessity dictates, we add those items back into our budget.
Travel-related expenses are our highest expense category (approx. $13,200 annually), though that is primarily vans and gas as we rarely stay in hotels and sleep mostly on the floors in the homes of generous friends and family members. We play matches and tournaments from San Diego to Portland competing against large DI and DII schools such as Stanford, Cal, and UC-San Diego, and many others.
Our goal is to return to the National Championships this year to represent HSU as one of the top teams in the nation. Wish us luck ... And stay tuned!
